Health Benefits of Black Pepper

The black pepper , also known in Brazil as black pepper, is one of the most common spices. Furthermore, it is one of the products that has the greatest influence on the historical context.

The beans, whether dried or ground, are used in several countries. One of its characteristics is the slightly spicy taste, derived from a chemical compound, piperine, which enhances the flavor of meals.

  9. Helps to decongest the nasal passages;

Finally, due to the inhibition of the action of some free radicals, black pepper helps fight cancer.


Recent studies have proven that black pepper consumption is a great therapeutic agent. It is important to highlight that it includes a chemical compound called “piperine”, which has antibacterial properties.

Still in this perspective, piperine can be used to enhance some drugs, such as those aimed at arthritis, respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. In addition, it can enhance the effects of other spices, when consumed together, such as saffron, for example.

Another property of black pepper is to help prevent neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, for example. However, it is essential to emphasize that peppercorns are not used exclusively for this purpose, as research is still ongoing.


Black pepper can be presented in several ways, namely:

  1. In whole grains;
  2. In ground beans; and
  3. In powder.

As previously mentioned, the main responsible for the pepper’s potential is piperine. Therefore, when pepper is ground, a large percentage of this component is lost. Therefore, the best thing to do is to both buy and use as natural as possible.

Furthermore, once we purchase the whole pepper, we make sure there are no additives, unlike pepper powder. In this sense, in order to ensure that the pepper is pure, it is suggested that round and compact grains be chosen and that they be stored at room temperature.

Black pepper is known to be an ingredient widely used in recipes. It can be used to prepare different types of dishes. However, the amount to be placed depends on the taste of who will consume the recipe.

See below some ways to use it:

  1. When preparing beef, for a stronger flavor, you can soak the meat.
  2. When making mutton or pork, you can add mint.
  3. If you choose to make grilled meats, black pepper can be added at the end of the preparation.


The curcumin present in turmeric and the piperine found in pepper improve health due to their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities. Piperine is known to increase the absorption of curcumin, which in turn fights poor digestion and cancer. Several studies have identified that turmeric root can help with thyroid-related problems and promote longevity.

From this perspective, black pepper and saffron are considered safe and can be consumed without side effects by most individuals. However, absorption levels are very low, so the body may not enjoy all the necessary properties. Therefore, it is suggested that black pepper be consumed concomitantly.

Aiming to extract the maximum benefits, there is a combination that can enhance the action, which consists of taking tablespoon (soup) of black pepper with turmeric. The absorption level in the body can be up to 2,000%.
