Health Benefits of Oregano

The origin of oregano (Orignanum vulgare L.) is in the mountains of southern Europe, the Mediterranean Sea, North Africa, the Middle East and Western Asia. The name comes from the word origanon (bitter herb), at the suggestion of Hippocrates, the father of medicine. It belongs to the family of basil, mint, rosemary, sage and lavender. Oregano arrived in Brazil through Portuguese colonizers.

It is also known as wild marjoram, wild marjoram. It is confused with other vegetables of its kind, especially with marjoram. Confusion is more common in southern Brazil. The differences between oregano and marjoram are in texture, size, flowers and aroma. The oregano leaves are dark green, the flowers are purplish, small and oval. Marjoram leaves are rough, firm and the flowers are violet or slightly greenish.

It was used as a spice in Ancient Greece and Rome. In Greece, the meaning of the word Oregano is “joy of the mountain” and the bride and groom wore crowns made with the spice. After marriage, couples planted oregano in the nearest cemetery to ensure spiritual happiness. In the Middle Ages, it was also in wine recipes. At this time, the spice was also present in rituals of magic and witchcraft.

The tree measures between 25 to 80 cm and the cultivation of oregano can be done by seeds. The soil must be fertile, well drained and rich in organic matter. Fertilization can be organic (earthworm humus or animal manure) or mineral (NPK, ammonium sulfate or simple superphosphate). Oregano withstands a little drought, likes the sun, but needs to be protected from the winds. The biggest producers are Greece, Turkey, Spain, France, Mexico, Chile and Peru.
