Health Benefits of Raspberry – Know its main properties

The raspberry ( Rubus idaeus ) is a small fruit with a slightly sour taste, very common in backyards throughout Brazil because of easy cultivation and maintenance. Its harvest season is in November, however, it is not difficult to find it in supermarkets throughout the year. Much confused with another fruit of the same species, the blackberry, the two are almost complementary, but have some singularities.

First of all, for reasons of education and curiosity, let’s differentiate the raspberry from the blackberry. An easy way to do this is to feel inside. Raspberry has a hollow core, while blackberries are whole. In terms of flavor, blackberry has an intense and less acidic taste, while raspberry has more smoothness, but more acidity. Some chefs compare the two fruits to wine: white and red have the same differences, but are similar.

Another tip is to use blackberry for syrups and cake fillings, as it has such an intense flavor. Raspberry, on the other hand, combines more with milk chocolates, for more sophisticated desserts. Both have their particularities and are very tasty, depending on the occasion, they can even work together.

When we walk the streets, especially in inner cities, it is easy to find raspberry plant, specifically. Blackberry trees are also very common. This is because they are relatively easy to grow as they are heat resistant.

As we are in a very hot country, they have become commonplace. But there are other precautions that are important to emphasize, such as avoiding excessive rain, for example. Regions where storms are common end up harming the plant, which is sensitive in this regard. Let’s go step-by-step so you can have your raspberry tree at home, without too many difficulties:

1- Choose the type that you like best : for those who don’t know, there are several types of raspberry and the differences between them are in the colors and flavors. Red and yellow ones are simpler to grow and are relatively sweeter. Black women are more prone to pests. However, this is a very personal question, choose which one you like best and take the necessary precautions that will avoid future problems.

Some people like black raspberry more and, although it is more difficult to keep healthy, it is well known for studies related to cancer prevention. They are still few, however, there are those who indicate this variation of the fruit because it contains more substances that help in the treatment of the disease. So, if you have more time to devote to planting and care, maybe this species is the most suitable.

For those who have little time and are looking for sweet fruit, the red and yellow ones are the best option and they still have a high nutritional value, preventing diseases and helping to fight excess weight. We also need to remember the wild raspberry, which has a stronger aroma, but ends up producing less fruit. They are ideal for people with small families.

2- Seedlings:  The raspberry seedling is very easy to find, and in almost all garden houses they are present. The tip is to look for one that is already fertilized and fully adapted to the climate of your region – ask the person responsible for selling these factors. Another important point is to avoid planting near other red fruit trees, as the adaptation is not good. Try using pots or plant in more isolated places, with direct access to the sun.

3- Care:  The important thing here is to know that this plant takes a while to grow. The proper time for planting is in early spring, so that it suits the climate. It is worth remembering that the raspberry fruit is fragile and needs great care when it is picked. Do this gently, avoiding hurting the branches. If you are going to change the pot, you need to be extra careful, or the plant may not resist. Don’t forget that she likes the sun, just have a place where sunlight hits most of the time.

You may be wondering about the benefits of raspberry over other fruits. Well, a good advantage compared to others is in calories: they are very low and can be consumed almost at will by anyone on a diet. This is because they contain a high level of proteins and less carbohydrates, which brings satiety, energy and little insulin production in the body, ie, it is recommended for diabetics.

Its origin is European, but it adapts very well to the Brazilian climate, as it likes a lot of sun and little rain. Which means that areas where storms tend to be severe at the end of the day are not ideal for growing raspberry plants.

1. Improvement in the intestine and the digestive system in general : they have a high number of fibers, which regulate this part of the body and bring relief to those who suffer from problems. For healthy people, the fruit prevents disease and helps to eliminate toxins.

2. Helps to eliminate wrinkles : its antioxidant properties and vitamins help to fight wrinkles naturally, helping the body to produce more collagen. That’s why it is often used in the form of face creams or masks, applied directly to areas that need regeneration. But, its intake by itself is already positive.

3. Aids in cancer prevention : As mentioned above, a study came to the conclusion that black raspberries help to prevent cancer, especially of the intestines, due to their properties. But, that goes for all its variations. As it is rich in fiber, the digestive system works better and some illnesses are avoided.

4. Improved immune system : raspberry is rich in vitamin C and other vitamins, which greatly help the immune system as a whole. It prevents disease, helps fight opportunistic viruses, and brings overall health.

5. Helps you lose weight : as said, raspberry is low in calories, which is essential for anyone wanting to lose weight. Furthermore, fiber once again fulfills its role by lowering the blood sugar level, which in turn improves nutrient absorption and decreases fat retention. We should also mention proteins and low carbohydrate content. All of this together promotes weight loss aids and even weight maintenance.

6. Prevents macular degeneration : macular degeneration is when aging causes a weakening of vision, which can even lead to blindness. Therefore, doctors recommend two to three servings of raspberry a day, which help to prevent the problem.

This little fruit can work miracles and has the advantage of being easy to grow at home. In addition, it can be used in several ways, such as:

– Syrups : they are delicious, with a strong aroma and can enhance a cake in a healthy way.

– Cake fillings : instead of sweets and chocolates, how about putting raspberries in the filling? It is delicious and very nutritious.

Jellies: a tip is to make jellies with the excess of fruit you plant, as they are easier to conserve and consume, and can be used in breads, toasts and even cakes.

– Juices : just blend everything in a blender, add a little milk or water and you’re done. The advantage is that sugar can be avoided, as the fruit is usually very sweet and easy to be consumed without adding any sweetener.
