Benefits of Parsley for your health – See what this herb is for

The salsa (scientific name Petroselinum sativum ), also known as parsley, salsa-hortense, common carrot and parsley-de-eating is an herb that has its origin in the Mediterranean region, especially in southern Italy, Algeria and Tunisia.

According to historians, parsley is one of the first spices used by mankind. It was the Greeks who were responsible for it having spread all over the world, where it is present in several culinary recipes.

The foliage is dark green and reaches up to 20cm in height and there are several species of this herb, some of which can withstand the heat better than others. The species are differentiated by their size and appearance of the leaves, such as parsley and crispy parsley.

Belonging to the same family as celery and fennel, parsley leaves are highly used as a seasoning in cuisine around the world, whether in raw form in salads, cooked with vegetables, as in the preparation of vitamins, dehydrated parsley tea or fresh. They have also been used along with seeds and roots in the preparation of natural remedies for thousands of years.

Although parsley is often confused with the green scent, the latter consists of a mixture of parsley and chives. There are regions in Brazil where coriander, an herb with a very strong flavor, is also included in the mix. Also, it is worth mentioning that parsley and parsley are the same herb, but celery is a different food.

The best way to preserve parsley is to wash it only when it is to be used. This is because, when the leaves are kept wet in the refrigerator, they tend to darken and rot more quickly.

Another way to store it is to keep it fresh in a closed container in the refrigerator. So that the shelf life of the leaves is longer, place a sheet of paper towel or a napkin on top of the parsley, so that the moisture in the leaves is absorbed and remain fresh for a longer period of time.

It’s good for the kidneys –  Drinking parsley is beneficial for fighting kidney stones and urinary infections, as well as controlling high blood pressure. The reason for this is because parsley has a diuretic effect and stimulates kidney function, eliminating fluid from the body. Therefore, it is an excellent remedy to cleanse the kidneys.

2. Prevents cancer –  Studies done with parsley have revealed that this herb, especially its essential oil, can help prevent the development of cancerous tumors. For this reason, it is considered a “chemopreventive” food by scientists. Because it is rich in antioxidants such as luteolin, taking parsley regularly helps fight free radicals, substances that can lead to cancer and cause premature aging.

3.Contributes to digestion –  Consuming parsley helps to improve the digestion of food, which prevents the occurrence of intestinal spasms. Constipation and slow digestion are also improved by ingesting this herb. To improve digestion, it is ideal to use it as an infusion and ingested before meals.

4. Acts as an aphrodisiac –  Parsley has been used as an aphrodisiac since ancient times, when it was believed to have the power to increase sexual desire and libido. According to scientists, the reason for this is because it has phytoestrogens, which are responsible for it. In addition, these components have special benefits for women, as they protect uterine health, contribute to labor and improve milk production.

5. Fights anemia –  Parsley is a food rich in chlorophyll, which acts as a blood purifier. In addition, as it contains a high content of vitamin C, consumption of this herb accelerates the absorption of iron by the body, which regulates the hemoglobin content and prevents anemia.

6. Treats bad breath –  Drinking the juice made with parsley is an effective way to get rid of bad breath. This is because it promotes colon cleansing, which, when it has an accumulation of bacteria, is one of the causes of bad breath.

7.Helps to heal wounds –  As it is an herb rich in histidine, which is an essential amino acid to repair body tissues, ingesting parsley helps in wound healing faster. For this reason, it is ideal for people who are recovering from wounds or who have had surgery.

AGAINST INDICATIONS AND HARM OF PARSLEY

Although parsley’s health maintenance properties are many, there are cases where its consumption should be avoided:

  • Parsley should be avoided by women who have heavy menstrual cycles, as it contains components that stimulate menstruation.
  • People with diabetes should consume parsley without excess, as it reduces glucose levels, which can result in hypoglycemia.
  • The consumption of parsley by pregnant women should be avoided, as it can cause bleeding, and excessive consumption can even cause miscarriage.
  • About parsley tea, contraindications exist when it is consumed in excess, as it can lower blood pressure. Therefore, it is recommended that it be ingested in a moderate way.

In addition, excessive consumption of parsley can cause side effects such as kidney problems and allergic reactions in certain people. However, when consumed in a balanced way, it is not harmful to health.
