The Uvaia , which has the scientific name of Eugenia pyriformis, is a Myrtaceae plant family, found in the Atlantic Forest, Paraguay and Argentina.

Since this fruit has a more sour taste, it may not appeal to everyone. If you want to sweeten it, honey is the best option. Consumption can inhibit hunger and prevent binge eating.


The uvaia has a delicate pulp as well as its skin. As they dry out easily, they are not often found in supermarkets.

This fruit has a sweet, sour taste and a mild aroma. It is worth mentioning that one of the most important compounds in citrus fruits is vitamin C. Thus, in addition to this fruit contributing to the immune system, it acts in the maintenance of collagen, increases the absorption of iron from food and helps in wound healing.

The tree, which is also known as uvaieira, can be found easily in the states of Santa Catarina, Paraná and São Paulo.

As this tree can reach up to 13 meters in height and 50 cm in diameter, it is used in several reforestation projects and many animals and birds feed on it.

The fruit, which has an acidic and sweet taste, can be consumed fresh or as jellies and juices, for example. The uvaia has up to four round seeds that can germinate in up to 60 days.

The tree blooms between August and September and bears fruit during the warmer months. As the fruits of not last long due to their fragility, it is suggested that the harvest be done as soon as they are firm.

The uvaia stands out for its tasty fruits and, perhaps for this reason, many people want to have a foot in their backyard. It is important to highlight that this tree has a better development under the sun, in a deep, irrigated and slightly acidic soil. Once the adaptation time has been established, the tree acquires low temperature tolerance.

Although this plant is adaptable to different types of soil, when it has good organic matter, growth will be much better. From the planting stage to the first fruiting, it can take four to six years.

It is recommended that planting be done in the sun and in holes at least 50 cm deep in soil mixed with sand and organic matter. One of the advantages of this plant is that, in addition to developing quickly, it does not require special care. Thus, once it is at the peak of development, irrigation promoted by rain will be enough.


Considering that the fruiting season of uvaia is between the months of September and January, it is common to find the fruit in markets and horticultural products. Since they are sensitive and delicate fruits, the probability of drying out is great. As a result, it becomes quite difficult to find them out of season.

On the other hand, products derived from uvaia can be found at any time. This includes jellies, jams, vinegars, liqueurs, ice cream and juices.

It should be noted that the consumption of the fruit is more powerful when done in natura , since, in this way, the properties are ensured. Therefore, frozen pulps can cause the properties to be lost.

We emphasize that tea leaves from this fruit are common in popular culture. Although there are several reports on aid in weight loss and combating hypertension, we suggest that consumption be done with caution, given that there are no studies that prove its effectiveness.

Although this plant greatly appreciates sunlight, in the intense summer season, choose to leave it in places where the sun’s rays are not hitting. After all, this plant is from a temperate climate. It should be watered daily, but do not add excess water. This practice can kill bonsai.
