Fruit tree pruning systems: Which one to use?

Fruit tree pruning systems have as their main purpose the correct development of the tree to guarantee a good harvest later. In addition, a good pruning done correctly will bring health and strength to our tree, qualities that will influence its development and growth. There are 4 fruit pruning systems that we explain below:

1) Formation pruning

We start our pruning systems with formation pruning. This pruning is characteristic of the first 3 or 4 years of life of the fruit tree. Once this period has passed, we will stop doing it since the tree is already old enough to start producing fruits and we will only carry out cleaning pruning and fruiting pruning.

It is essential to carry out the pruning of training during the first years to guarantee an adequate form that implies a production of fruits accordingly.

2) Cleaning pruning

It is the best known by everyone, fans or not of horticulture. It is about eliminating the remains of the tree that are not healthy, such as dry or dehydrated branches.

It is necessary to carry out cleaning pruning every year and on absolutely all species of trees.

3) Fruiting pruning

Fruiting pruning is one of the most important fruit pruning systems. In this case, it is intended to renew the shape of the tree to leave it ready for next year’s harvest, hence its importance.

4) Regeneration pruning

This pruning is not done regularly but it is necessary in certain cases in which we see how some of our fruit trees begins to produce in smaller quantities. Before thinking about uprooting the tree, we can spend the last cartridge doing the regeneration pruning with the aim of making our tree sprout.

There are different methods applicable in regeneration pruning:

  • Headless: cut the cup with all its branches.
  • Branch tertiary: 1/3 of the length of the branch is left too far from the trunk whose production has become scarce.
  • By grafting: we will avoid the regrowth of the thick branches and instead we will make a graft spikes on the cuts of said branches.
  • Recepado: basically consists of the cutting at ground level. It is the most drastic regeneration pruning and many horticulturists do not bother to do it because they prefer to buy a new specimen.

The above fruit pruning systems are the most recommended and it is advisable to use each of them just at the time, place and time in which they should be carried out. No more, no less. Everyone to prune!
