Fruit Trees of Puerto Rico

In this post we will talk about the fruit trees of Puerto Rico. This is a country with a tropical climate, with plenty of sun and abundant rainfall, which favors the growth of fruit trees, as well as vegetables and vegetables. Fruit Trees of Puerto Rico: Tamarind

The Tamarindo tree is a large, slow-growing tree that can reach 80 feet. Its fruit is a pod with scaly and brittle skin, dark brown, its pulp is sticky and has hard seeds. The taste of the pulp is bittersweet and spicy and is used in different preparations.

This tree adapts to arid climatic conditions and is able to withstand heat and drought. It should be planted in deep soil and with good drainage. It only requires a lot of water when the tree is young.

Its scientific name is “Chrysophyllum cainito L” and it is a tree that can reach between 10 to 20 meters in height. It requires high temperatures and high humidity, develops well in shallow sandy soils and in deep clay soils. It does not withstand periods of flooding and requires good drainage.

Its fruit is globose, approximately 3 cm in diameter, with white and sweet pulp. Its first harvest occurs at 3.3 years.

Fruit Trees of Puerto Rico: Carob Tree

Its scientific name is “Prosopis nigra” and it is a legume species of trees that bears fruit between November and March. It tolerates arid climate well, however it can survive in flooded terrain. Its fruit is a pod inside which is a sweet paste and starch, which is used to make an alcoholic beverage.

Puerto Rico Fruit Trees: Mango

This  is a medium-sized tree  that can reach between 10 to 30 meters in height, its trunk is cylindrical and can reach between 75 and 100 cm in diameter. Its bark is grey-brown, with longitudinal cracks.

Its fruit is fleshy, greenish, yellowish or reddish in color, with a very sweet and tasty flavor; contains a large flattened bone, surrounded by a woody covering; There are many varieties of the fruit, but the species “Mayagüezano”, “Mangostino” and “Largo” are the most typical of this country.

Fruit Trees of Puerto Rico: Avocado

The  avocado tree is a medium-sized, deciduous type that can reach 60 feet in height. Its crown is rounded, its bark is grayish brown and its leaves are green, shiny and large.

Its pear-shaped fruit is green, with a yellow pulp inside and a rounded seed, covered with a brown woody layer. Avocado is mainly used to accompany other foods.

Fruit Trees of Puerto Rico: Papaya

This papaya tree has a thin and soft trunk, it is common in tropical and semitropical areas. It is a flimsy tree that does not resist winds, so it is recommended that it be protected by other trees.

Its fruit has a soft and sweet pulp, with a hollow center full of small black seeds that is consumed naturally or in various preparations such as jams, pasta, chopped, as well as in the preparation of juice and sweet.

Soursop Tree

The soursop is an evergreen tree, which can reach between 8 and 12 meters in height and its crown is little branched. As for its production, the plantings are not organized, however they occur in the wild and are frequently used for natural fences for livestock. It is a common tree in home gardens. Its fruit is green in peel and very sweet.

Acerolas Tree

The acerolas tree belongs to the rosaceae family, is leafy and can reach up to 20 feet. Its leaves are of the perennial type, elliptical, oblong, obovate, or narrowly oblanceolate. It has white, silky and irritating hairs when very young, without hairs, dark green and bright when ripe.

Its fruits usually grow alone or in groups of 2 or 3, its skin is thin, of a bright red color and its pulp is orange and acidic in taste. It contains only three seeds of small size and rounded shape.

Tahiti Currant Tree

Its scientific name is “Phyllanthus acidus” that can measure between 20 to 30 meters, it has a subtropical climate. Its fruit is bitter, so it is not consumed naturally, a sweet is prepared and the syrup is frequently used to accompany biscuits and ice cream. The time of greatest fruit production is from February to June.

Its scientific name is “Melicoccus bijuagatus Jacq”, it is a tropical tree of the “Sapindaceae” family, it is also known as mamón, mamoncillo, Spanish lemons or lemongrass. The skin of the fruit is green and its flesh is salmon-colored.  The area of ​​greatest production is concentrated in Ponce and the best month to consume them is the month of August.

Its fruit is a drupe, classified as exotic, which grows in clusters. Its pulp is gelatinous and fibrous, it can be sweet or acid.

Heart Tree-Chirimoya

This tree belongs to the annonaceae family, is slow growing and can reach between 7 to 8 meters in height. Its branching may be irregular and its stem is cylindrical. The fruits are very large, being able to weigh between 4 to 6 pounds, has soft pulp and is usually consumed fresh.

Mamey Tree

The mamey is a very large tree, which can measure between 60 to 140 feet, its crown is cylindrical, dense, dark green. The fruit has red pulp and has one to two large black and shiny seeds. The shell is reddish-brown, hard, rough and brittle. While the pulp varies in texture and orange-red or grayish in color, it is very sweet, acroamatic and soft when it reaches maturity.

Other fruit trees in the country are guava, pomarrosa, jaguas, jobo, abiur, bilimbí, Brazilian cherry tree, among others, which make Puerto Rico a country of fruit tree production par excellence
