Seasonal fruits in Spain

Seasonal fruits are those that we manage to find with greater ease and abundance at a certain time of the year. In Spain there is a great variety of fruits that we can consume in each season.

Buying and consuming seasonal futas has great benefits, both nutritious and economical since they contain a greater amount of vitamins and a lower amount of pesticides and preservatives.

When we go to buy characteristic fruits of each season of the year, we can save money since their price decreases thanks to their greater production and demand.

 

Fruit calendar in Spain

What are the seasonal fruits like? Each fruit has different seasons where you can make the most of each of its properties. In Spain there is a great variety, for your enjoyment month by month. Below we will see some of the most consumed futas in this country, as well as the best season for their collection, consumption and distribution: spring fruits, autumn fruits, summer fruits and winter fruits.

Seasonal fruits in spring

Medlar. March and June are the months of early and late harvesting of this fruit, with April and May being the months of greatest collection and consumption. The loquat reaches its greatest sweetness and flavor in the season of intermediate months, where they are ripe and less indigestible.

Strawberry. From February to May we can find this fruit in its best season, in these months we have the time of greatest collection and consumption. We have that the early harvest begins in January and the late one culminates in April.

Cherry. This fruit is characteristic of the spring season, being the end of fruiting in summer. Its date of collection and consumption is very short, starting in April with its collection and taking advantage of its greater consumption in the months of May, June and July.

Seasonal fruits in summer

Apricot. It is a European fruit that we can find mainly in the summer season, although the fruiting of its tree begins in spring and can last until autumn.

In the months from April to September, it is where the early and late harvesting begins respectively. The subsequent months of June to October, is the best time for the collection and consumption of this seasonal fruits.

Pear. The pear can be obtained as a seasonal fruit in summer, this time of years is where nature offers us the greatest variety of fruits.

This refreshing fruit is harvested early and late in the months of June and December respectively. July, August, September, October and November are the months of greatest consumption and collection.

Cantaloupe. Summer fruit that begins its season in May until October. Where May and October are the months considered for early and late harvesting, while the months from June to September are the most suitable for harvesting, increasing its consumption and thus decreasing its commercial value.

Seasonal fruits in autumn

Khaki. This fruit begins its season when the temperature begins to decrease announcing the end of summer. It is characteristic of autumn.

Its best flavor can be enjoyed between the months of October to December, with its harvest beginning in September and ending in January.

Grape. Representative fruit of the month of December, where most tables in Spain enjoy its flavor at Christmas.

The early harvest of this fruit begins in August. Its greatest consumption takes place in the months of September, October, November and December.

Custard apple. The custard apple is a fruit that must be handled with great care, as it is very delicate and can be easily damaged. The early harvest before its maturation is very important for its better transport and commercialization, this begins in the month of September.

The months of October, November and December are the most suitable to consume the custard apple, its sweet taste becomes more pleasant at this time, where it reaches its optimal maturity.

Seasonal fruits in winter

Orange. Orange is one of the most consumed citrus fruits in Spain. Its best time is winter, in the months of May and October we have the early and late harvest of this fruit.

The best season for harvesting and consumption is between the months of November, December, January, February, March and April.

Apple. This delicious fruit, widely consumed in Europe, is also characteristic of the winter season. In the months of February and July, early and late harvesting is included.

From August to January are the months of greatest collection and consumption, that is, in this season the freshest, sweetest and most economical fruit is found.

Grenade. The harvest of the pomegranate must be done before it reaches its maturity, for this reason the early harvest is carried out in the month of August and we can enjoy it the following months until the month of November where the season of greatest consumption ends.

Fruits for the whole year

Plantain. The banana can be found during all seasons of the year, it is best in areas where the climate is constant as in the Canary Islands.

From January to December we can enjoy the benefits and properties of this rich and nutritious fruit.
